Today is the first day (Sunday) of Week 1, Michaelmas Term, in Oxford. Freshers went to the river for a taster of rowing in an VIII. Actually, they were tricked, as the taster took place in the afternoon, lovely warm Autumn afternoon, nothing to do with real training at 5am in the winter rain.

Now that I’m raptured by the illusion of freedom, I went to Queen’s Theatre in London with Pablo, Ruth and Sergio to see ‘Les Misérables’. The title must refer to the audience. I guess there’s nothing wrong with the musical per se, but the singers were appalling. Thankfully, dinner in Chinatown cheered us up.

Kuwait decided and impromptu holiday because of Ramadan, so Laura and Andrew paid a visit to Oxford, and we had tea at The Nosebag.

Gabi came to Oxford for business, and we had a small Carlos III reunion with Pablo and Ruth, who came to spend the Summer in Oxford.

Jaime dropped by from Philadelphia, and my hostess, Katherine, kindly took us to 2nd Ave Deli, a kosher delicatessen where I had the chance to show off my extensive knowledge of Jewish culture by ordering a vanilla milkshake with my chopped liver sandwich.

And so begins this journey across the Atlantic, to New York (via Madrid to renew my passport). Air Comet cancels our flight, and alas, we spend 10 hours at Gatwick airport.
